Why can't you just use any battery?
A car battery is built to deliver a huge burst of power for 5 seconds to start the engine, then get recharged immediately. That's called a starting battery.
A golf cart battery is a deep-cycle battery. It's designed to provide steady power for an hour or more, get partially discharged, then get recharged – over and over, hundreds of times.
If you put a car battery in a golf cart, it might work for a few weeks. Then the thin plates inside will warp and fail. I've seen it happen more times than I can count.
So yes, you absolutely need a deep-cycle battery. But even among deep-cycle batteries, there are big differences. Let's go through them one by one.
The 3 non-negotiable things that must match
2.1 System voltage – get this wrong and you're in trouble
Most electric golf carts run on 36V or 48V. A few heavy-duty or high-speed carts use 72V.
How to check your cart's voltage – no tools needed:
- Lift the seat and look at any one battery. The label will say 6V, 8V, or 12V.
- Count how many batteries you have.
- Multiply: single battery voltage × number of batteries = your system voltage.

- 6 batteries × 6V = 36V system (older EZGO TXT, Yamaha G series)

Flooded lead-acid is the old faithful. It's cheap and widely available. But you have to check water levels with a distilled water bottle every few weeks. If you forget, the battery dries out and dies early.

You can upgrade – but you must do three things:
- Keep the same voltage. A 36V lead-acid cart needs a 36V lithium pack. A 48V cart needs 48V lithium. Changing voltage means replacing the controller and motor – too expensive.

But if you use your cart only a few times a month and want the lowest upfront cost, flooded lead-acid is still fine.
3 real mistakes my customers made (so you don't)
Mistake #1: Replacing only one bad battery
A customer had four 12V batteries. One tested bad. He bought just one new battery. Two months later, the new battery was dead. Why? Old batteries have higher internal resistance – the new one gets overcharged during charging and overworked during discharge.
